Utilities & New Resident Checklist
One detail that surprises a lot of newcomers: Alameda is served by Alameda Municipal Power (AMP), a publicly-owned, city-run electric utility - not PG&E. AMP advertises rates lower than PG&E and 100% clean electricity, plus rebate programs for electrification projects (heat pumps, EVs, etc.). Set up service directly at alamedamp.com.
Other essentials to set up when moving in:
- Water/sewer: East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD)
- Garbage & recycling: check with the city for the current contracted hauler
- Internet/cable: availability varies by block - confirm providers at your specific address
- DMV: update your address and, if moving from out of state, your driver’s license and vehicle registration
- Voter registration: update your address with Alameda County
- Library card: the Alameda Free Library issues cards to residents at no cost
Because AMP is separate from PG&E, anyone moving from elsewhere in the Bay Area should specifically confirm they’re contacting AMP, not PG&E, when setting up electric service.
