Parks, Sports & Rec Leagues
The Alameda Recreation & Parks Department (ARPD) is the third-oldest park system in California, and it runs programs across more than 30 parks and facilities serving upwards of 15,000 people a year. Rather than one generic “rec department,” it organizes programming by age group, with a couple of dedicated facilities worth knowing about if you’re moving with kids or aging parents:
- Toddlers & Tots (6 months–5 years) and Elementary (K–5) - classes and activities for younger kids
- Teens (13–17) - centered on the Underground Teen Center, a dedicated space and program line for teenagers
- Adults (18–49) - general adult programming and leagues
- Seniors (50+) - centered on the Mastick Senior Center
- Aquatics - swim programs across the city’s pools
Specific classes, sports leagues, and after-school programs change seasonally, so rather than list offerings that will go stale, check ARPD’s current Activity Guide and register directly through their ActiveCommunities online portal - both linked from alamedaca.gov/Departments/Recreation-Parks. For questions, ARPD can be reached at (510) 747-7529 or arpd@alamedaca.gov.
For the island’s actual park locations and facilities, see the live directory on the Recreation page, pulled from OpenStreetMap.
